By deconstructing the current hierarchical structure of theatre creation, and placing the designers and creators at the helm, what kind of world can we create? C. Alex Webster, Emilia Richardson, and Kelly Murphey will discuss the process of creating “9 in the Morning”, a 10-minute performance presented marathon style using bone conduction headphones.

The Building Blocks of Action
How do you as a playwright develop your plot? How do you select and create an order of events that provide meaning? What is the importance of a “scenario”? Does your plot have to follow a formula? What are the outcomes you are seeking? And ultimately, how do you tell your story? These are some of the questions we will explore in creating “action” in your plays.

Saying Yes: Improvisation for the Actor
Improvisation is an essential tool for every actor; yet many actors break into a cold sweat just thinking about going off-script! This gentle, friendly workshop is open to all levels of experience and will help performers use improv to achieve greater spontaneity on stage. If you find yourself “stuck” sometimes, wishing you could make truly bold choices - this is the class for you! Using techniques from top improv schools such as The Second City, Peoples Improv Theater, and Upright Citizens Brigade, actors will explore how to “live in the moment” more fully – embracing impulses, reacting truthfully, and building self-awareness. The workshop will begin with group warm-ups to explore the essential concept of “Yes, And,” followed by exercises focused on listening, making positive choices, and how to foster cooperation within an ensemble. Ultimately students will implement concepts through improvised scenes. The fundamental skills learned in this workshop will surely enhance an actor’s approach to scripted work, but can also apply to directing, teaching, and many other disciplines.

Status in Acting
Determining and understanding the status of a character can dramatically affect the choices made by an actor. Vocal placement, movement patterns, posture, gesture, tempo, rate and rhythm are all colored by the character’s status in their world. In this experiential workshop, participants will uncover questions in determining character status, explore what characters are willing to do to maintain their status, and investigate how other characters are affected by the status choices.

The Writer's Mixtape | Exercises in Rhythm
In this class writers will explore rhythmic potential in dialogue and monologue. Through a series of exercises writers will challenge traditional form and function of theatrical language, and embrace the musicality of their own writer voice. This is not a class on songwriting, poetry, or how to write a "proper" monologue. No need to be good at any of the aforementioned. Bring music, soundscapes, instruments, any other device that disrupts silence, and a willingness to write and laugh for a bit in a high energy room. And water. Water is always good.

The Playwright's Toolkit: On Building Worlds and the Semiotic Language
Semiotic theories take signs or sign systems as their object of study. Playwrights are charged with the task of creating the Semiotic Language for the stage (by portraying systems, functions, ideas and thoughts through conflict, metaphor, and the juxtaposition of language and image.) This is an interactive laboratory for those wanting to explore the function of image as language, and language as image-making for the stage. Through a series of activating writing prompts, the participants will write stage directions, a short monologue, and a robust character description prompted from a series of images, a musical score, and an interesting collection of costume pieces and props, respectively.

Lessons from the touring crew: Marking the stage the Centerline and Zero Zero way.
One of the first steps for any load in is marking the stage. This workshop with describe and demonstrate two of the methods used by touring shows to lay out points in a quick and efficient manner. The “Centerline” method uses two cloth tapes and “Zero Zero” method, with a roll of curtain webbing. These methods are normally intended for the layout of motor points used by a touring show; however, they can be used by any department that needs to mark their stage with great accuracy.

Prague Quadrennial 2019:  Student Perspectives of Changes in Scenographic Practices
Prague Quadrennial 2019 was held last summer, and the presenters had the fortunate experience of attending exhibits, workshops, and studios over 11 days in Prague, CZ.   The presenters are graduate students from Texas State University who represent 2 different design disciplines, giving them each a unique perspective on their experiences at the showcase.  They will review the highlights of the work they saw, as well share their discoveries of how design is evolving on a global scale. PQ’s mission is to act as “a global catalyst of creative progress by encouraging experimentation, networking, innovation, and future collaborations.”  The presenters left PQ with a desire to continue an international dialogue and share their discoveries with other students and theatre professionals in our country who were not able to attend. PQ featured the work of 800 artists representing 79 countries in a curated exhibit.  Programming included lectures from leading international practitioners as well as in-depth studio workshops and experimental technology as scenography. These lectures explored questions such as, “What is scenography?” “How is the field changing?” “What is the role of the scenographer in creating dynamic performance design?” “How do we collaborate with one another?”  We are in the midst of an enormous change in practices both in our country and abroad.  This workshop addresses the changes that are occurring on a national and international stage.

Fear Factor: Using Halloween to Make Shakespeare Accessible
In the Fall of 2019, the UTEP Theatre Department collaborated with a local supposedly haunted high school to create a site specific theatre piece drawn from Shakespeare. The resulting piece, Shakespeare’s Asylum, was a multi-faceted success! The 40 minute production served as an ideal tool to introduce both audience and young actors to Shakespeare in a fun and accessible format. Pulling from half a dozen of Shakespeare’s more macabre works, the piece was buckled together with a unifying aesthetic and the script was massaged to create a narrative through line. A mix of cheap jokes, jump scares, and gore became the spoonful of sugar to introduce audiences to the bard’s powerful poetry and create positive first impression of classical language for young students. Using the success of Shakespeare’s Asylum as our jumping off point, this workshop will discuss leveraging Halloween as a tool to introduce students to Shakespeare.
