Semiotic theories take signs or sign systems as their object of study. Playwrights are charged with the task of creating the Semiotic Language for the stage (by portraying systems, functions, ideas and thoughts through conflict, metaphor, and the juxtaposition of language and image.) This is an interactive laboratory for those wanting to explore the function of image as language, and language as image-making for the stage. Through a series of activating writing prompts, the participants will write stage directions, a short monologue, and a robust character description prompted from a series of images, a musical score, and an interesting collection of costume pieces and props, respectively.
