In the Fall of 2019, the UTEP Theatre Department collaborated with a local supposedly haunted high school to create a site specific theatre piece drawn from Shakespeare. The resulting piece, Shakespeare’s Asylum, was a multi-faceted success! The 40 minute production served as an ideal tool to introduce both audience and young actors to Shakespeare in a fun and accessible format. Pulling from half a dozen of Shakespeare’s more macabre works, the piece was buckled together with a unifying aesthetic and the script was massaged to create a narrative through line. A mix of cheap jokes, jump scares, and gore became the spoonful of sugar to introduce audiences to the bard’s powerful poetry and create positive first impression of classical language for young students. Using the success of Shakespeare’s Asylum as our jumping off point, this workshop will discuss leveraging Halloween as a tool to introduce students to Shakespeare.
